Mania is the key defining characteristic of Bipolar Disorder that makes it so very special and unique from all the other disorders out there, so it’s not shocking that I get asked to describe what it feels like quite often.

Just the other day a well-meaning girlfriend – I say that without smarm – asked me about my most recent bout of mania as we were happily strolling down Ventura Boulevard.

“It’s like being really hyper, right?”

Compliments … words most people adore. Words that make people blush. Words that make people feel good about themselves. Compliments are confidence boosters … mood lifters … reminders that we are awesome. Who wouldn’t want a compliment from time to time?

 Memory loss and weight gain: Medicine gives and takes away

May 2008: I went to Anilao, a beautiful dive spot in the Philippines with some friends. The pictures on Facebook show we had a good time – as the Terry Jacks’ song goes, “We had fun, we had joy, we had seasons in the sun”.

Problem is – I couldn’t remember that I was ever on this trip at all, until someone tagged me in one of the photos online.

Up until that point, I was so sure that I had never stepped foot on Anilao.

 A couple of weeks ago, I had an initial assessment with a psychologist from my Community Mental Health Team. The purpose of the session was to look at how talking therapies might be of benefit to me in helping me manage my bipolar disorder. We started by talking about what had been happening in this most recent episode, and I described its roots and the treatment tried so far. I explained that I was taking my medication as directed – I’m always a very well-behaved patient in that regard!
