Message from our Executive Director
It’s People That Matter!
When I was in graduate school I learned a valuable lesson that has become a guiding principle throughout my career. I had taken a yearlong internship in Seattle, Washington and my Field Instructor was Harold “Shorty” Brown. In one of our weekly staff meetings, Shorty handed me a financial statement to review. After a few minutes he asked me if I could tell him where the company was financially. Shorty wanted to know our “bottom line.” Well, that wasn’t too hard, I had experience with financial statements, so locating the net income for the company, which, of course, was the last line of the financial statement, was a snap. I took a look down at the statement and looked up with a smile and quoted the amount. To my surprise he said “no, that’s not it.” I took a second look. I was sure that was it. I reviewed out loud the revenue and expenses and came out with the same figure. It seemed everything was in order. So I said, “If that’s not the bottom line, then I don’t know what is.” I think that was exactly was Shorty wanted to hear. He simply said “if you get to the bottom line and it’s a number, you’re not at the bottom line, because the bottom line is always people!” Its people that matter!
Here at the International Bipolar Foundation people matter to us. People like Moms and Dads who are struggling with a bipolar child. Young adults who are coming under the stress of college life and starting new careers. Middle aged or older adults who may have gone years before finally finding an answer to the difficulties they have faced. Married couples who are working on the extra challenge of Bipolar Disorder within their marriage. Family and friends who are seeking the best way to support and encourage the one they love. No matter where they are in the world.
The Foundation is working to fund research to find a cure for Bipolar Disorder because people matter. The Foundation is promoting care and support services because people matter. The Foundation is working to erase the stigma around the disorder because people matter. The Foundation is educating the public about Bipolar Disorder because people matter.
Shorty wasn’t saying that we shouldn’t be good stewards of the resources that we are given. Financial accountability is of utmost importance. Excellent management is always a hallmark of any outstanding organization. And these things are true of the International Bipolar Foundation! However, it is always done with an eye for why we are in business. And our business is people!
I ask that you generously support the International Bipolar Foundation because we need your donation to continue this important focus on people. Your gift means that more people will be reached around the world through the efforts of research, the promotion of support services, education, and the ending of stigma related to the disorder. You can rest assured that the gift you give to the International Bipolar Foundation goes to where it matters most, not to some bottom line figure, that is just a number on a financial sheet, but to where it matters most…people!
